Boxed In 2021

Many people will have memories from early childhood of storing their private treasures in a shoebox. In that same spirit, Sculpture Tasmania Challenges Sculptors to exercise their imagination and make a sculpture that fits within a 31 x 18 x 12 cm shoebox.

Boxed In 2021 invited artists from across Australia to show how they can handle the challenges of space and scale to produce works small enough to fit inside a shoebox. Working with that scale presents numerous challenges to the artists. Details become magnified, each added element or nuance of form, surface patina, and texture is an integral part of the conceptual dialogue where the viewer is immediately draw into the intimacy of the scale, where close scrutiny is the expectation. We encourage you to ‘rise to the challenge’.

A $5,000.00AUD acquisitive prize will be generously awarded by the Mersey Valley council.
All short-listed applicants will receive an artist fee of $200.00 sponsored by Arts Tasmania.

Sculpture Tasmania, in partnership with the Meander Valley Council and Arts Tasmania will leverage this event to promote a new exhibition opportunity for the regional and remote Australian artists.
